As I stare down my computer screen, trying to come up with a topic to cover for this new project, I am overcome with all of the information that I am itching to share. I believe there is no best topic, and there are plenty of great ones. What comes to mind is something my first Master Instructor said to me; “Don’t get it perfect. Get it GOING!”
How often do we get caught up in getting it “right” before we take that first step? I am guilty as charged. I hired my website developer in the summer, and we are finally wrapping up this project. (She’s probably reading this)
What was stopping me??
Fear The fear that I wouldn’t get it right. The fear that I would put something out there that didn’t express perfectly what I want to express about ST3 Kickboxing and Fitness, or my philosophies on fitness. Fear is paralyzing, and when we let go we start getting the results we require.
What else?
Overwhelm. I would sit down and feel so overwhelmed by all of the copy I would have to write, along with everything else on my plate. I would frequently find myself mindlessly scrolling on Facebook, when I could have had more hours of productive time.
What does this have to do with fitness?
FEAR – How intimidating is it to walk into a new space where everyone seems to know everyone else and seems to be executing every move perfectly. The whole time all you can think is “What if I can’t make it through class?” “What if I’m not coordinated enough?” “Will I hurt myself?” “I hope I don’t die” You get the point. The fact is even that person with the perfect roundhouse kick, and amazing muscles started somewhere, and they were probably thinking the same thing. Write down all of your excuses. Draw a line in the middle of the page and write fear at the top of the column. When you take a good look at your excuses, how many of them fall into the category of fear?
Overwhelm – We are freaking busy!!! We’ve got kids, work, homework, meals to prepare, people all over the place who NEED us!!!! How can we possibly find an hour of time to add a regular workout? IF MAKE YOUR HEALTH A PRIORITY THEN YOU WILL FIND THE TIME! As a single mom, I know I could have thrown time in the mix of reasons not to get started. I wasn’t just overwhelmed, I was OVERWHELMED. I worked a full-time job (sometimes 50+ hours a week), I was in school, and my daughter had activities. All I knew, is if I didn’t work on my physical and mental health, then I was never going to be the mom my daughter needed me to be. If I have any doubts that dragging her to evening classes (way before iPads were a thing) all I have to do is look at the woman she has become. She is driven and confident, and she always makes fitness a part of her busy life.
I know where you’re at. I’ve been there. I, in all likelihood, will be there again. The solution is so simple; one foot in front of the other and go.
When is the perfect time to get started? Right now.
